poppa
   A variant spelling of ‘papa’, especially when the latter is stressed on the first syllable. Usually abbreviated to ‘Pop’, but it occurs as ‘poppa’, in both cases by a boy to his father, in Comfort me with Apples, by Peter de Vries and The Philanderer, by Stanley Kauffmann. De Vries spells it idiosyncratically as ‘Popper’. In The Late Risers, by Bernard Wolfe, ‘Poppa’ is used by a black American man to another. He is addressed as ‘Daddy-o’ in return.
